A Mug, a Mic, and a Small Ritual

Not every musing needs a guest. This one is about a mug.

The newest addition to my recording desk is a HuMed mug: white, black inside, with the same stacked "Hu MED" as the logo. It sits right next to the microphone, and I'll admit it made me smile the first time I saw the two of them side by side.

A logo on a screen is one thing. A logo you can wrap your hands around is another. It made the show feel a little more real.

Before every conversation there are a few quiet minutes. The guest hasn't joined yet, my notes are in front of me, and I'm trying to get out of my own head and ready to listen. Now there's a mug in that picture too.

Why this is the human side of medicine

Medicine is full of small rituals nobody writes down. The pause outside a patient's door. The breath before walking in to talk with a family. They're how we get ready to be fully present for someone else.

That's what HuMed is about. Not the procedures or the diagnoses, but the people behind them, and the moments that never make it into the chart.

One question for you

What's the small thing you reach for before a hard day?
